WAR SCHÖN. KANN WEG... Age(ing) in the Performing Arts
WAR SCHÖN. KANN WEG... Alter(n) in der darstellenden Kunst
Symposium:
How can we as performing artists work, mature and (survive) artistically well as we grow older?
After more than 30 years of artistic work in the performative and installative field, Angie Hiesl + Roland Kaiser now want to explore questions about the "dramaturgy of aging" in art within the framework of a symposium. Together with colleagues, producers, organizers and committee representatives as well as other experts from science, art promotion and the press, an intensive exchange is to take place. You are cordially invited to attend.
Everyone is getting older. What challenges do artists in the performing arts face in this regard? Which basics are necessary to be able to work well in the long term, regardless of age?
In different discussion formats, relevant questions will be discussed and strategies developed together:
- What is the significance of age in performative art?
- Does age play a role in art at all - and if so, what role and for whom?
- How can we benefit from age diversity in the performing arts?
- When are artists considered "established"?
- What does age do to the development and perception of an artistic work?
- When is a career considered over, or who determines the end of such a career?
- Which funding structures also take into account demographic age trends?
- What kind of livelihood and retirement security is necessary?
- What remains of artists and their art?
We look forward to a lively exchange with you. Registration for the purely digital event will be activated at the end of January 2021.
Date: 25th Feb, 2021 / from 10.00 am (digital, full day)

The Symposium on February 25, 2021
YOUNG + OLD - how can we survive as performing artists on the long run?
Due to the constantly changing age structure of our society, the perspective on the term 'age' is also changing. What challenges do artists in the performing arts face in this regard, whether they are at the beginning of a career or are established? What is the relationship between age and art? What basics are necessary in order to be able to work well in the long term, regardless of age? What structural obstacles need to be overcome and what do solutions look like? These and other questions were addressed by the online symposium hosted by the artist duo Angie Hiesl + Roland Kaiser in February 2021.

The pdf-documentation of the symposium can be downloaded here. It only exists in German.
The symposium was organized in cooperation with kubia - Kompetenzzentrum für Kulturelle Bildung im Alter und Inklusion and was funded by the Kunststiftung NRW (Art Foundation NRW) and the Förderfonds Kultur und Alter (Culture and Age Support Fund) of the state of Nord Rhine-Westphalia.
The Book
The great response generated by the February 2021 symposium highlighted the importance of the topic and prompted Angie Hiesl, Roland Kaiser and kubia - Competence Center for Cultural Education in Old Age and Inclusion, to compile in-depth texts and publish them in book form. What influence does age(ing) have on the performing arts? What is the relationship between age and the arts? What about the socio-economic reality and old-age provisions as well as appropriate funding concepts? These are the topics explored in the book.
Here you can find more information and order the book in print or e-format. The book exists in German only.
